Workshops for parents and guardians

I would like to provide you with knowledge that will help you support your children’s language development in everyday life. Sometimes a few tips can help to improve communication in the family. It is important to me that there is plenty of time for exchange and questions. You know your children best. You know what makes them tick and what does them good.

I am a speech therapist, but also a mum. I know what questions we have and what hurdles we face in everyday life. As parents, we are often unsure if we are doing the right thing. Or we reproach ourselves for not having done something correctly. I want to support you because we also do a lot of things right. And for some things you just need a little support. After all, our children are not born with an instruction manual.

That’s why I would like to help you with all the questions that come up during language development.

I offer the following (online) workshops (in English or German) with the following topics:

1. How can I support my baby’s (toddler’s) language in everyday life?

We discuss:

  • How to build joint attention for communication
  • How to create child-directed interaction as a basis for language development
  • How to use baby talk to help your child understand speech
  • How to use supportive communication/gestures
  • How to use all senses to improve language
  • How to use routines to learn new words
  • How to use everyday objects and situations to support language development

Duration: 1 hour (30 minutes lecture, 30 minutes question and discussion session)
Costs per seminar: 150 EUR (if own (seminar) room is provided) or as online workshop

2. What should I know when I raise my children bilingually? How can I support them?

We discuss:

  • What influences the language development of multilingual children?
  • What are the advantages or disadvantages of learning multiple languages?
  • Does multilingualism lead to language disorders?
  • Should we speak our home language at home?
  • If there are several languages at home: Should each parent speak only one language?
  • Should we speak only one language at home?
  • At what age should children start learning languages?
  • When should I be concerned about my child’s language development?

Duration: 1 hour (30 minutes lecture, 30 minutes question and discussion session)

3. Spoken and written language: When is my child fit for school?

We discuss:

  • Similarities and differences between spoken and written language.
  • Factors that influence literacy acquisition, including:
    • Vocabulary (how many words children know and how much they know about a word)
    • Letter knowledge/awareness of print media (e.g., books, magazines)
    • Phonological awareness (awareness of word forms, e.g., recognising rhymes).
  • How the different areas can be facilitated
  • When reading and spelling problems are present
  • How speech and language therapy can help

Duration: 1 hour (30 minutes lecture, 30 minutes question and discussion session)
